The Ninth Day of Christmas
St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen
Today, we remember two friends and spiritual giants, St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen. Their shared commitment to a life of faith, prayer, and service offers a timeless example of how we can live in community and solidarity.
St. Basil, known for his towering intellect and deep compassion, was more than a theologian—he was a builder. One of his most enduring legacies is the Basiliad, a complex that served the poor, the sick, and the homeless. It wasn't just a place to meet immediate needs but a vision for dignity, care, and hope—a tangible expression of Christ’s love.
At the Cecil Hotel, I see glimpse of that same spirit. While we don’t have grand complexes like the Basiliad, what we create is no less meaningful. When a tenant finds a warm meal, a listening ear, or a bit of dignity restored through a small gesture, the heart of St. Basil's vision comes alive again.
In his day, St. Basil addressed the great inequities of his world with courage and creativity. At the Cecil, we work to do the same in our own way, inspired by his belief that no one is beyond the reach of grace. This Ninth Day of Christmas reminds us that the work of love and justice never truly ends—it only deepens with time.
This Christmas season, we invite you to share in this mission. Your generosity helps us continue to serve those most in need, bringing light and hope to places that need it most. Together, we can build something that lasts, just as St. Basil did so many centuries ago.
