Justice with Mercy: Jacob's Road to Recovery
When the system wanted to punish, we fought for help -- and won.
Last year, I wrote about Jacob’s struggles—his battles with addiction, his mental health challenges, and how those issues landed him in serious legal trouble. The system was ready to throw him away, lock him up for life, with the possibility of parole after 22 years, without addressing the real issues that brought him there in the first place.
But that’s not what happened.
Thanks to relentless advocacy—both from us and from his dedicated public defender, Alfredo Torres—Jacob isn’t being warehoused in prison. Instead, he’s getting the treatment he needs.
I have been present at every single one of Jacob’s court hearings, standing with him through every step of this process. And I haven’t stood alone. I have prayed constantly for the heavenly intervention of St. Vibiana, patron of the City of Angels, and Bishop Dave, in life, a stalwart defender of the vulnerable in Los Angeles. I believe they were with us, guiding the court toward justice, mercy, and real hope for Jacob’s future.

The court recognized that Jacob’s addiction and mental health issues needed real intervention, not just punishment. Now, he has a real shot at turning his life around. He’ll spend six months in residential treatment, followed by 18 months of aftercare. That’s time to heal, to rebuild, and to become the person he wants to be.
We are deeply grateful for this outcome. It’s a reminder that, sometimes, the system can work the way it should—when people refuse to give up on someone. Jacob has a long road ahead, but at least now, he has a path forward.
Jacob’s story is just one example of what’s possible when we refuse to give up on people. Our work at the Cecil—standing with those who are too often cast aside, advocating for justice with mercy, and offering real support to those in need—is made possible by readers and supporters like you.
If you believe in this work, consider becoming a Friend of the Cecil or making a donation. Every contribution helps us continue walking alongside those who need a second chance, a helping hand, or simply someone who won’t turn away. Walk with us as we keep the light of hope burning.
Thank you for all you have done for Jacob. Your work is so important.
