Dishes and Dignity: Building Hope and Home at the Cecil
Dishes, Reconciliation and Progress on Main Street
As the summer winds down, our work at the Cecil Hotel continues to grow and deepen in unexpected ways. Today, I want to share with you some of the latest developments that fill my heart with both gratitude and hope.
Dishes and Dignity: A Fresh Start for New Tenants
One of our newest projects, "Dishes and Dignity," has been launched! The concept is simple but powerful: providing new dishes, utensils, and dishwashing supplies to recently arrived tenants at the Cecil. Many of these individuals arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs, and the simple act of handing them a new set of dishes—something so basic and essential—becomes a moment of dignity and a transforms their room into a home
.We often take for granted the little things that make a house a home, but for these tenants, having something as ordinary as a matching set of plates or coffee cup — and the means to clean them — make all the difference. It’s a step toward rebuilding their lives, one meal at a time.
Cal’s Journey Home
I’m also thrilled to share the story of our friend Cal, a long-time resident of the Cecil who, after 25 years, is finally making plans to go home. Cal’s journey has been one of reconciliation and healing, particularly with his sister, from whom he had been estranged for many years. Their reunion has been a blessing for everyone. While is not heading home just yet, the knowledge that he can go home has been empowering.
Cal’s reconciliation with his sister is a poignant reminder of the enduring strength of family, even when the bonds seem irreparably broken. Cal’s resilience and his sister’s willingness to forgive and welcome him back into her life are testaments to the power of love and the possibility of new beginnings.
Post-March Progress: Maintaining the Cecil
Finally, I want to update you on the progress we've made since our recent march to City Hall. The march was a turning point for many of tenants, galvanizing support and drawing attention to the issues facing the Cecil tenants. In the weeks since, we've seen some encouraging signs. Maintenance in the building has improved, with repairs being made more promptly and consistently.
We’ve also noticed a growing sense of community among the residents. The march brought people together in a way that we hadn’t seen before, and that unity is now manifesting in everyday acts of support and solidarity within the building. It’s a small but significant step toward creating a more livable and dignified environment for everyone who calls the Cecil home.
I am grateful for all who walked with us and all who listened to our cries from the wilderness!
A Call to Continue
As always, our work is far from over, and we need your continued support. Whether it’s through donations to help with projects like Dishes and Dignity, or simply sharing our stories with others, every bit of help makes a difference. Together, we can continue to build hope, restore dignity, and create a sense of home for those who need it most.
Thank you for standing with us, and for being a part of this journey.
I welcome your updates and enjoy reading them. I applaud Dishes and Dignity and all the work you do for the little ones, who are all of us.
